Shelter From The Storm: CUNY Aids Sandy's Victims

Dear York College Alumni:

I hope that you are all safe and that you have not suffered any personal loss of family or friends. I am aware that many of you have experienced loss of power and property damage as a result of Hurricane Sandy. Please know that my thoughts are with you during this difficult time.

York College is sheltering more than 800 evacuee guests on our campus. While our administrative offices opened on Thursday, the shelter operation continues. We thought you might like to see the following article from CUNY about the campuses, including York, that are housing evacuees.

Subject:	The Passing of a Former York College President

It is with deep sadness that I share with you that our former president, Milton G. Bassin, died Monday morning, August 13, 2012. He had been critically ill for the past few weeks.

Mr. Bassin served as York's indefatigable president from 1971 until his retirement in May of 1991. Under his steady leadership, York survived the fiscal crisis of the 1970s, which had threatened to close the burgeoning college. President Bassin exhibited a steely determination and knack for bringing the external community together with the college community. He led the fight for York's survival and for York to remain in Jamaica, remain a senior college and build a permanent campus.

Milton G. Bassin was York's second President and to date, its longest serving. He was a staunch advocate of a tuition-free CUNY on behalf of the students who, like himself, came from humble beginnings. Last fall we honored Mr. Bassin at York during the 45th-year anniversary celebration. In 2007 we also showed our appreciation for his service with an honorary doctorate degree, which meant the world to him.

Funeral services for President Bassin will be held at Temple Beth El in Great Neck - 5 Old Mill Road (corner of Old Mill and Middle Neck), on Wednesday, August 15 at noon. The family has not yet finalized plans for Shiva; but they are thinking that it will be on Wednesday evening, Thursday evening and Friday, during the day until sundown.

An Outstanding Graduate

Nicolas Hunter-Walker graduated Summa Cum Laude in May. "He could be the academically brightest Physics major ever graduated ..." said Prof. Tim Pagloine. Hunter Walker was the recipient of the Prof. Eugene Levin Scholarship and the University Student Senate Award. He also received an honorable mention in the Chambliss Astronomy Achievement Award at the American Astronomical Society in Washington, D.C.; and was inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa. What's next for Hunter-Walker? He will be pursuing his Ph.D in astrophysics at the University of Washington.

2nd Annual Scholarship Benefit Official Invitation

You are invited to attend the York College Foundation�s 2nd Annual Scholarship Benefit on Tuesday, April 21st at York�s Performing Arts Center.

This year�s event will salute the Tuskegee Airmen and honor Congressman Gregory Meeks and Christopher Ward, Executive Director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

Headlining the evening will be a performance by Tony Award winning stage, film and television actor Brian Stokes Mitchell.

All proceeds from the event will be used to provide Merit Scholarships to academically qualifying students.
