Title: What Can I do with a math degree?

Abstract:
Are you majoring in math or thinking of majoring in math? Do you wonder what you could do with a degree in math besides teaching, engineering or becoming an accountant? The truth is that mathematics majors are in great demand in a number of very varied professions. Join us as we explore why and answer the question of what you can do with a math degree.

MATH CLUB TALKS WILL TAKE PLACE EVERY WEDNESDAY FROM 4pm - 5pm IN ROOM 2C07.

Mathematics Club --> Wednesdays 4pm

Dear Student:

Math Club will begin meeting every Wednesday from 4pm - 5pm in the Math Dept Conference Room (AC/2C07). You DO NOT have to be a math major to attend. There will be some cool math, interesting folks and snacks. We will begin on Wed Feb 8th with a session on problem solving where we will look at problems from the CUNY Math Challenge (see item 2 for info on the challenge). A schedule for the Math Club Talks is attached.

HUM 320: Honors Seminar
Perspectives on Global Inequality

Rishi Nath (Mathematics and Computer Studies) and Mark Schuller (African American Studies and Anthropology)
Wednesdays, 3 � 5:50p

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course offers an inter-disciplinary approach to the study of global inequality. In particular we will examine how the anthropological, statistical, game-theoretic and economic disciplines capture different information about the following issues: development, environmental justice, human rights, gender, and democracy. The focus will be on the regions known as the global south (or developing world). We will also examine the contests over the history and motivation of knowledge production�that is, which questions about inequality are asked, and who is asking them? The final project will involve students identifying an under-discussed global issue and analyzing it.

Title of Talk: Linear Algebra and the Geometry of Graphs

Abstract:
The aim of this talk is to show how the calculation of eigenvalues, a basic topic from linear algebra, can be used to study the isoperimetric constant of finite graphs. Time permitting, we will give an extension to infinite graphs. No prior knowledge of any of the topics mentioned above will be assumed.

Title: A Musical Introduction to Group Theory

Abstract: Certain concepts of music theory can be used to introduce straightforward examples of higher-level mathematics such as groups and rings. Join us as we define inversions, look into their use in music composition and explore how structuring these may lead to a definition of a group, sub-group and co-set.

All are welcome!
No prior knowledge of music or group theory is required!
