York Should Be Heard!

Dear York Colleagues,

The votes from the Pathways referendum are coming in, and the early returns from the American Arbitration Association show that fewer than half of the eligible voters at York have voted. I know we can do better, and I’m asking you to take fewer than five minutes to express what so many of you have expressed to me in private conversations. It’s so important for us to vote for what we honestly believe will provide the best education for the students we love and hope to serve well. Your voice needs to be heard so we will no longer be misrepresented as to Pathways. I have heard York colleagues say that our voice within CUNY is not heard; this is a chance to change that!

I’d like to see us reach at least 66% of the full-time faculty voting, and that means that we need another 75 votes before the end of next week. I am writing to thank you if you have already voted, and to ask you to be one of those 75 if you haven’t.

The No Confidence in Pathways referendum is a chance to speak out about a critical academic issue that has been decided for us by the administration. It’s a chance to demand that the faculty voice be heard. How could we miss the opportunity to participate?

There is still time to vote, even if you never received a ballot or cannot find yours. Call the union office (212-354-1252) and ask for assistance in getting a ballot. Once your eligibility is verified, the American Arbitration Association will email you instructions on voting, along with the identification number you need in order to vote. Then you can vote immediately by phone or on the web.

Be one of the 75 votes we need to reach two-thirds participation at York! Don’t pass up this chance for our college to be a significant part of the conversation.

Adjuncts, Read Your Reappointment Letter Carefully

Make sure the salary listed in your reappointment letter matches the salary you should receive under the PSC-CUNY contract. You may be due a step increment in your hourly pay rate, based on semesters of adjunct service at CUNY. Following your completion of six semesters of teaching at CUNY over a three-year period, including summers, you are entitled to a pay increment which should take effect July 1 after you become eligible. It is your responsibility to notify the Human Resource Office at each college where you teach regarding your CUNY-wide work history to make sure that you are on the right salary step. The college has the contractual obligation to notify you of your title and hourly rate of pay in your appointment letter. If you believe that your hourly rate of pay is incorrect, you must notify your college�s Office of Human Resources within 30 work days of the first day of the semester to receive a retroactive pay adjustment for the semester. It is a good idea to period

The PSC Library Faculty Committee would like to remind you to vote in the referendum on Pathways. All full-time library faculty should have received a ballot in the mail. The paperwork included with the ballot also has instructions for voting by phone or online. If you have not received your ballot, please call the PSC offices at 212-354-1252.

Your participation in the referendum is important. Below you will find a brief statement outlining the Library Faculty Committee's position.

The members of the PSC Library Faculty Committee have �no confidence� in Pathways. We believe that faculty governance, especially the faculty�s historical role in deciding curriculum, was subverted by the process in which Pathways was designed and imposed. Moreover, we believe the Pathways structure does not foster robust, inquiry-based learning and reduces the opportunities for students to receive classroom instruction from librarians.
